Connecticut Man Arrested After Wild Springfield Shooting Sends Bullets Into School and Cars

Thankfully, despite a terrifying flurry of gunfire that saw bullets strike a local charter school and two parked vehicles, not a single soul was injured. Authorities have since apprehended a Hartford, Connecticut, man in connection with the frightening incident, bringing a sense of relief to the community.

The unsettling events unfolded rather rapidly, around 9:15 a.m. on School Street. According to initial reports from the Springfield Police Department, officers were immediately dispatched to the area after receiving an alert from the city’s sophisticated ShotSpotter system, which pinpointed gunfire in the vicinity. Upon their prompt arrival, the scene painted a clear and worrying picture of the danger: bullet casings were discovered scattered on the pavement, and both the Veritas Preparatory Charter School building and a pair of nearby parked cars bore the unmistakable, grim marks of gunfire.

Springfield Police officers, acting on critical information and their sharp initial observations, managed to locate a person of interest, later identified as 30-year-old Jose Colon of Hartford, Connecticut, in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. A brief but determined foot chase ensued, leading officers to State Street where they successfully apprehended Colon without further incident. Crucially, during his arrest, police recovered a loaded handgun, adding another serious layer to the already grave allegations against him.

Colon now faces a serious litany of charges, reflecting the severity and potential danger of his alleged actions. These include carrying a loaded firearm without a license, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building (a particularly serious charge given its proximity to a school), possessing a firearm with a defaced serial number, malicious damage to a motor vehicle, possession of ammunition without an FID card, and malicious damage to a school building.
