Australia vs Pakistan: David Warner out for 34 in farewell Test as rain disrupts play

In his 112th and final Test match, David Warner had to leave the pitch with 34 runs, missing out on his much desired century. Rain hampered the second day's play of the third Test between Cricket Australia and Pakistan at SCG, leaving Australia trailing behind by 197 runs on Day 2. The wickets of top Australian openers David Warner and Usman Khawaja were taken by Pakistan, followed by the interruption by inclement weather.

Marnus Labuschagne was at 23 while Steve Smith finished with six runs in the team's total of 116 for two. Play was suspended due to poor light and rainfall before tea. Warner's final Test pursuit of a century was hampered by the unfavorable circumstances.

Warner, renowned in cricket circles as ‘the Bull’, was stumped by the unexpected bounce and turn out of the rough by offspinner Agha Salman and was caught off the shoulder of his bat by a thrilled Babar Azam at slip. The disappointed opener departed to a standing ovation from his home crowd. Warner, who will possibly be batting for the second innings in his last Test, has a career total of 8,729 Test runs since his 2011 debut, with 26 centuries and an average of 44.53.

He was almost out at 20, but young debutant Saim Ayub at first slip dropped a catch in Aamer Jamal’s first over. Pakistan’s fielding in this series has been plagued by such missed opportunities. Khawaja, who boasts an average of 130 in Tests at the SCG, was taken out for 47 off a gloved catch from Jamal, only detected upon review following a patient 143-ball stint.

While Smith and Labuschagne still have strong track records at SCG, next in line will be Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh, who has scored 90, 63 not out, and 96 in this series, promising a strong batting lineup. Rain interruptions have persisted with the Sydney Test's typical wet weather, with SCG witnessing 26 washed out days, the most for any Australian Test ground.

Australia already sealed the three-match series with a nail-biting 79-run victory in the second Test in Melbourne over the Christmas period.
