The second Test between India and South Africa witnessed a thrilling kickoff at Newlands in Cape Town. An exceptional 23 wickets tumbled during the first day’s game on Wednesday, setting a new high in South Africa. Only one instance from way back in 1902 has seen more wickets fall on a single day in a Test match.
Choosing to bat first, South Africa were dismissed for just 55 runs, marking their weakest initial innings performance since they resumed Test cricket post-apartheid. In response, India achieved a lead of 98 runs, attaining a total of 153 runs at the loss of only four wickets, before a disastrous collapse. Following a lead in the two-match Test series of 0-1, India lost another six wickets without making any addition to their score, finishing with just a 98-run lead.

As he reflected on the extraordinary day in Newlands, Jasprit Bumrah, who claimed two wickets in the first innings, remarked to SuperSport, "Cricket never ceases to amaze. Seeing the wicket in the morning, no one anticipated an action-packed day as it turned out to be. It was indeed an intriguing day of cricket."
“We have faith in our bowlers, many of whom are new to Test matches. We talked about being consistent and bowling in partnerships, and getting the basics right repeatedly. I'm thrilled we achieved that,” he added.
At the end of the day, South Africa reduced their deficit to 36 runs, standing at 62/3.
"There's a lot of work left to do. I made my Test debut on this ground, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. If we can do things right, the result will favour us,” Bumrah continued, who ended his day with three wickets.
