Adani Power and Druk Green Forge Rs 6,000 Crore Hydroelectric Partnership in Bhutan

In a monumental stride towards bolstering renewable energy and fostering deeper bilateral ties, Adani Power, a prominent Indian energy major, has joined forces with Bhutan's Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC). The two entities have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to embark on a transformative Rs 6,000 crore (approximately $720 million) joint venture, aimed at developing a powerful 570-megawatt (MW) hydroelectric project in the serene landscapes of Bhutan.

This ambitious undertaking is set to harness the pristine waters of the Sankosh river, marking a significant commitment to clean energy generation.

The energy generated from this state-of-the-art facility will primarily be supplied to India, further solidifying India's strategy to enhance its clean energy portfolio and import sustainable power from its Himalayan neighbour.

The collaboration underscores a long-standing and robust energy partnership between India and Bhutan.

For decades, India has been a steadfast partner in the development of Bhutan's vast hydropower potential, which is a cornerstone of the kingdom's economy. Bhutan's surplus hydropower finds a ready and substantial market in India, a symbiotic relationship that benefits both nations.

This new 570 MW project builds upon the success of several existing joint ventures and India-assisted hydroelectric initiatives in Bhutan, including the operational Chukha, Tala, Kurichhu, and Mangdechhu projects, as well as others currently under construction.

These ventures not only provide a reliable source of clean energy but also contribute significantly to Bhutan's economic growth and development.

The MoU was formally exchanged by the Managing Director of Adani Power and the Joint Managing Director of Druk Green Power Corporation in Thimphu, witnessed by senior officials from both sides, signaling a strong commitment from both governments and corporate entities.

This joint venture is poised to be a beacon of cross-border energy cooperation, paving the way for a more sustainable and energy-secure future for the region.
