A Morning's Sudden Terror: When a School Bus Tilted and a Community Rushed to Aid

The morning commute, usually a mundane ritual for so many, became a scene of absolute chaos and dread in Mandya. Honestly, who could have predicted that a school bus, ferrying bright-eyed students from Navodaya Vidyalaya, would suddenly – and violently – overturn?

It happened, you see, near Gejjalagere, not far from the town itself. The bus, which had been making its way from Srirangapatna, found itself in a rather precarious spot, specifically at a bend in the road right beside a canal. And just like that, the world tilted, quite literally, for the young passengers aboard.

Estimates suggest there were perhaps thirty to forty students inside. Imagine the terror, the sudden lurch, the screams. It’s enough to make your heart seize. Local residents, truly the unsung heroes of moments like these, didn’t hesitate. They rushed, immediately, to the scene, their collective goal singular: to help, to pull the children to safety.

Roughly fifteen to twenty students, mostly with minor injuries — bumps, scrapes, the kind of things that sting but aren’t life-threatening — were quickly attended to. A young girl, Bhoomika, suffered a rather significant leg injury, a painful reminder of the sheer force involved in such an incident. All of the injured, without delay, were transported to the Mandya District Hospital for proper medical attention.
