Winter Weather Alerts Issued for 7 States With New Year's Eve Snow To Hit

Few weather related disruptions are expected for much of the country on New Year's Eve, but winter weather advisories have been issued for seven states. The National Weather Service's latest forecast says there is little to no precipitation expected for much of the country as people ring in 2024 on Sunday night.

However, a clipper system is set to bring a "light wintry mix" to parts of the Midwest, Central Appalachians and mid Atlantic. Winter storm watches have been issued for Alaska, while winter weather advisories remain in effect for the parts of Alaska, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, Montana and Wisconsin.

Winter storm watches have been issued for several parts of the states, including St. Lawrence Island, the Yukon Delta Coast, the Central Aleutians and the northern and western Arctic coasts. Forecasters warn that blizzard conditions are possible, and up to eight inches of snow are expected in some places.

Winter weather advisories are also in effect for the south slopes of the Central Brooks range, the Dalton Highway Summits and the Yukon Flats. The NWS has urged caution and put in advisories for counties in northern Illinois until midday CST on Sunday. Freezing drizzle is expected in much of the northern part of the state, with drivers warned to be aware of slippery road conditions.

Winter weather advisories are in effect for parts of north central and northeast Iowa, expiring by noon CST. The advisories say up to another inch of snow could fall in some places and that drivers should plan on slippery road conditions. Warnings have been issued for counties in the northwest of the state.

Benton, Jasper, Lake, Newton and Porter Countie have been advised of icy conditions, the advisory expires at noon CST on Sunday. Freezing drizzle is expected and ice accumulations of a light glaze, especially on bridges, overpasses and elevated surfaces. A winter weather advisory is in effect for parts of southwest Minnesota until 6 a.m.
