Who is Jo Koy? Meet the comedian hosting the 2024 Golden Globes

Jo Koy has been announced as the host for the 2024 Golden Globes. If you're not familiar with him, he stepped in after well-known comedians like Chris Rock rejected the role and former hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler declared their hosting days over. Koy embraced the opportunity, telling USA Today it was a "childhood dream," and expressing excitement about taking on the helm. Speaking with Variety, he outlined his plan to bring humor, but also a sense of celebration to the award show, recognizing the challenges the entertainment industry has recently overcome.

The 52-year-old comedian and actor, whose real name is Joseph Glenn Herbert Sr, is known for his multiple stand-up specials on Netflix, a memoir titled "Mixed Plate", and his participation in E!’s late-night show “Chelsea Lately”. His work got recognition from acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg, leading to their collaboration in producing the 2022 movie, “Easter Sunday.” Koy also counts among his credits episodes of “Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens,” and “Mr. Iglesias”.

Born to a Filipino mother and a white American father who left the family when Koy was young, he went by the stage name "Jo Koy" - a nickname given by his aunt. The majority of his upbringing was under the care of his mother. He reconnected with his father later in his life, a journey he opened up about during a 2022 appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”

Koy’s commitment to his craft extends beyond acting and comedy. He revealed to Deadline that he wants to do more behind the camera and produce more stand-up specials for other comedians. As part of his “Jo Koy World Tour,” Koy plans to continue performing across the U.S. and Europe following his Golden Globes hosting gig.

Away from his professional commitments, Koy remains close to his ex-wife, Angie King, with whom he shares a son, Joseph J Herbert Jr. Despite their divorce, Koy maintains a friendly relationship with King, emphasizing the importance of a loving environment for their son. Koy has frequently expressed his admiration and love for his son, even drawing on their experiences for his stand-up material.

In the past, Koy had a close to a year-long relationship with Chelsea Handler, with whom he remains friends even after their breakup. The 2024 Golden Globes, hosted by Jo Koy, will be broadcasted on Sunday, Jan. 7 at 8 p.m. on CBS.
