Watch: Patrick Mahomes’ helmet shatters after big hit during Kansas City’s Wild Card playoff game

The weather was historically cold during the Kansas City Miami Dolphins’ Wild Card playoff game on Saturday night. With the temperature dipping to 5 and the wind chill temperature dropping to 30, unusual things were bound to occur. It’s not often that a helmet worn by a player shatters, but that’s exactly what happened to Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

A piece of Mahomes’ helmet went flying following a helmet to helmet collision between Mahomes and Miami safety DeShon Elliott. Mahomes’ helmet was so cold and brittle the hit created a crack, leaving a obvious hole. Playing with a helmet with a hole, Mahomes soldiered on for another play. Mahomes said he didn’t know his helmet had cracked and it was new experience for him, but he wasn’t coming out of the game.

“I didn’t know what happened in the moment but I got in the huddle and everyone was telling me, but I was like, ‘I got y’all, but I’m not coming out of the game, so we can figure it out on the sideline,’” Mahomes told reporters after the game. “It was a first for me.” According to the rules, Mahomes should’ve been forced to come out of the game to get a different helmet.

Instead, Mahomes ran another play before officials halted the game for Mahomes to get a new helmet. Elliott wasn’t penalized for a helmet to helmet hit and apparently neither player was checked for a possible concussion..
