Utah state senator opposed to COVID mandates, trans surgeries for kids announces bid for Congress

Republican Utah State Senator Mike Kennedy has announced his intention to run for Utah's 3rd Congressional District's vacant seat, currently held by GOP incumbent John Curtis who has intentions to replace Mitt Romney in the U.S. Senate. The district which includes portions of Salt Lake City, as well as Orem and Provo, has been a Republican strong point for some time. Both former president Trump and John Curtis won with large margins in 2020 and 2022 respectively.

Kennedy, who has a background in family medicine and law, unsuccessfully ran for the U.S. Senate in 2018 against Mitt Romney. Though he scored the most votes in the Utah State Republican Convention, he was ultimately beaten by Romney in the Republican primary. Kennedy was known for his work in the Utah State Senate where he played a key role in passing legislation against COVID mandates and procedures for transgender minors. However, he does not hold any resentment, believing party disputes are more destructive and asserting his readiness to cooperate with anyone with innovative ideas to create a better future for all.

Kennedy’s experience as a doctor was of great use during the height of the pandemic in 2020 as he cared for patients and conducted independent research on COVID-19. He emphasizes the importance of balancing health and livelihood considerations in response to the pandemic.

It is worth noting that Roosevelt Mayor Rod Bird Jr. is also contesting for the seat while former Utah State Representative Chris Herrod and State auditor John Dougall are contemplating joining the race. The primary election is scheduled for June 25 and the general on November 4.
