Urgent Health Alert: Hepatitis A Exposure Linked to Sunshine Coast Food Truck

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) has issued an urgent public health warning following potential Hepatitis A exposures linked to a popular food truck operating on the Sunshine Coast, B.C. The alert specifically concerns patrons who consumed food from 'The Gourmet Girl' food truck between May 1 and May 22, 2024.

Hepatitis A is a viral infection that primarily affects the liver.

While often mild, symptoms can range from fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain to dark urine, light-colored stools, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). The severity of symptoms can vary greatly, and in some cases, the illness can be quite serious, particularly for individuals with pre-existing liver conditions or compromised immune systems.

The health authority emphasized that the risk to the general public remains low.

However, for those who ate at 'The Gourmet Girl' during the specified timeframe, the risk is higher. Vancouver Coastal Health is advising anyone who consumed food from the truck during this period to monitor themselves for symptoms for up to 50 days after their last exposure, as this is the typical incubation period for the virus.

Furthermore, VCH is strongly recommending that individuals who were exposed between May 13 and May 22, and who have not previously been vaccinated against Hepatitis A, contact their healthcare provider or local public health unit to discuss receiving a post-exposure vaccination.

This vaccine, when administered within 14 days of exposure, can be highly effective in preventing the onset of the illness or reducing its severity.

Public health officials are working closely with the food truck operator to investigate the source of the exposure and ensure all necessary preventative measures are in place.
