Tragedy Strikes Anantnag: Police Officer Falls Victim to Suspected Terror Attack

On Wednesday afternoon, around 12:30 pm, gunfire rang out at Lal Chowk in the heart of Anantnag town, J&K. A police team on routine security duty was caught in the cross‑fire, and one of its own – Constable Aashiq Hussain, a resident of Beerwah in Budgam district – was gravely wounded.

He was rushed, still bleeding, to the Government Medical College hospital in Anantnag. Despite frantic efforts by the medical staff, the injuries proved fatal and he later succumbed.

The incident, which local media are treating as a terrorist strike, sent shockwaves through the valley. Within minutes, security forces sealed off the surrounding area, laying down a tight cordon while teams of police and army personnel began a painstaking search for the gunmen.

Additional troops have been deployed, and the operation continues under a cloud of tension. The cordon remains in place as investigators comb through CCTV footage and interview witnesses, hoping to piece together who orchestrated the attack.

This tragedy unfolded against the backdrop of heightened security for the annual Amarnath Yatra. Over the past week, authorities have used facial‑recognition systems to nab several suspects – an over‑ground worker on July 11, three others on July 8, and a UAPA‑accused individual flagged by the same technology.

It also marks the first major strike in the region since the horrifying Pahalgam massacre that left 26 people dead. In response, the Indian government has already rolled out “Operation Sindoor,” a large‑scale counter‑terror initiative aimed at flushing out militants and preventing any further bloodshed.

Friends, family and fellow officers have taken to social media to mourn Hussain’s loss, describing him as a dedicated servant of the community. The incident has reignited concerns about security gaps in the valley, especially as the pilgrimage season draws millions of devotees.
