TMC Fires Back: Kunal Ghosh Accuses BJP of Distorting Mamata Banerjee's Durgapur Remarks

In a fierce counter-attack, Trinamool Congress (TMC) spokesperson Kunal Ghosh has vehemently accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of deliberately twisting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s statements regarding the sensitive Durgapur alleged gang-rape case. Ghosh asserted that the BJP is engaging in a 'dirty political game' by misrepresenting the Chief Minister's remarks to score political points.

The controversy stems from an alleged gang-rape incident in Durgapur, which has drawn significant public attention and outrage.

Mamata Banerjee, while commenting on the case, reportedly mentioned 'boys making mistakes,' a statement that the BJP immediately seized upon, portraying it as a trivialization of a heinous crime and an attempt to downplay the severity of the incident. This interpretation sparked a firestorm of criticism against the Chief Minister from various political quarters.

Kunal Ghosh, however, clarified the context of Mamata Banerjee's statement.

He explained that the Chief Minister was referring to the initial phase of the incident, where there was an alleged consensual relationship between two individuals. According to Ghosh, her remark about 'boys making mistakes' pertained to this earlier interaction, not the subsequent horrifying act of alleged gang-rape.

He stressed that Banerjee's words were taken completely out of context and manipulated to create a false narrative.

Ghosh highlighted Mamata Banerjee’s unwavering commitment to women's safety and justice throughout her political career. He pointed to numerous initiatives and actions taken by her government to protect women and ensure swift justice for victims of sexual assault.

'Mamata Banerjee has always been a fierce advocate for women's rights and safety. To suggest otherwise is a malicious and politically motivated lie,' Ghosh declared.

The TMC spokesperson further accused the BJP of resorting to cheap politics and character assassination, particularly when faced with electoral challenges.

He urged the public to see through what he termed as the BJP's 'desperate attempts' to malign the Chief Minister's image and divert attention from their own governance issues. Ghosh reiterated the TMC's commitment to ensuring that justice is served in the Durgapur case and that all perpetrators are brought to book, emphasizing that the law would take its own course without political interference.
