Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk acknowledged on Tuesday afternoon that the team explored the idea of trading Mike Vrabel before ultimately firing him — but ultimately decided not to. Vrabel is expected to draw a lot of interest from other teams with vacant head coaching positions, and this led many to wonder why the Titans didn’t explore trying to get something in return for the coach.
But Strunk contended during a sit down with the Titans’ in house media that the process would have taken too long and it would have impacted their ability to search for a new coach. “Yes there was, but there’s a bit of misconception about a coach’s contract say versus a player’s contract,” Strunk said.
“A coach’s contract, you can’t trade them unless they’re a willing partner to that trade. So yes we thought about it, but at the end of the day, with league rules the way they are, it would have maybe put us back three weeks. “And honestly, to get the right head coach, I was just not willing to go to the back of the line and take a chance of missing out on someone we really wanted.” Interview with Amy Adams Strunk pic.twitter.com/w9CkHBN1Fb As of now, no word has come out about the Titans requesting any interviews with potential candidates, but that process should start in the coming days.
As for the structure moving forward, Strunk wasn’t able to say if the new head coach would report to her or general manager Ran Carthon or who would have control of the 53 man roster. The Titans owner also struck down the notion that only coaches with an offensive background would be considered for the now vacant position.
“Actually no. I believe we need to improve across the board,” Strunk said. “So it’s important to find someone that brings in a lot of diverse ideas and fresh perspective. “That’s the most important thing in that new head coach.” Tennessee went 6 11 this season, which was the team’s worst record during Vrabel’s six seasons with the Titans.
The club also missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year..
