Surrey Shooting Incident Not Connected to Region's Extortion Investigations, Police Confirm

Surrey, B.C. – Authorities in Surrey have confirmed that an early morning shooting incident, which left a 28-year-old man injured, is not related to the widespread extortion investigations currently plaguing the Lower Mainland.

The incident unfolded shortly after 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 19, when Surrey RCMP officers responded to reports of shots fired near the intersection of 132 Street and 64 Avenue.

Upon arrival, police located a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition.

In a direct address to public concerns, Surrey RCMP stated that despite the ongoing concerns regarding organized crime and extortion, this particular shooting appears to be an isolated event and is not linked to those broader investigations.

“We want to assure the public that, at this time, this incident is not connected to the recent extortion investigations in the Lower Mainland,” said Corporal Sarbjit Sangha in a recent statement, aiming to alleviate fears of a direct link to the region's current crime trends.

Police have identified the victim as an individual known to them, though his name has not been released.

Investigators quickly clarified that while the shooting is not considered random, suggesting a targeted attack, it does not fall within the scope of the extortion rackets that have seen several businesses and individuals threatened across the region.

The Surrey RCMP’s Serious Crime Unit has taken charge of the investigation.

Officers are meticulously gathering evidence, canvassing the area for witnesses, and reviewing surveillance footage from nearby properties. They are appealing to anyone who was in the vicinity during the early hours of Tuesday and may have witnessed the shooting, or has dash-cam footage, to come forward and assist with their inquiries.
