The Bethlehem community, and indeed the many lives she touched, are surely feeling a profound sense of loss with the recent passing of Susan C. Saloum. She departed this world peacefully, at the age of 76, on Sunday, April 28, 2024, at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg, right there in her beloved Bethlehem. Susan wasn't just a resident; she was a vibrant, integral part of the fabric of the city she called home.
Born Susan Kassis in Allentown on January 12, 1948, she was the cherished daughter of Michael and Agnes Saloum. From those early days, it was clear she had a bright spark. She grew up right here, walking the halls of Liberty High School and proudly graduating with the Class of 1965. But her quest for knowledge didn't stop there. She then pursued higher education at Moravian College, earning her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish in 1969. That degree, you see, was just the beginning of a remarkable career dedicated to shaping young minds.
For three decades – a truly impressive tenure – Susan poured her heart and soul into the Bethlehem Area School District. She wasn't just a teacher; she was a mentor, a guide, a champion for her students. Many will fondly remember her as their Spanish teacher at Northeast Middle School, and later, at Freedom High School. It's no surprise that her dedication and leadership were recognized, leading her to become the Chairperson of the World Language Department at Freedom High. What’s more, she even took on the important role of President of the Bethlehem Education Association, advocating tirelessly for her fellow educators. She left an indelible mark on countless students and colleagues alike, fostering a love for language and learning wherever she went.
Beyond the classroom, Susan led a rich and fulfilling life. She was, by all accounts, an avid reader – someone who truly savored the written word, getting lost in stories and knowledge. Travel was another passion, allowing her to explore new cultures and broaden her horizons. But perhaps most importantly, Susan was a devoted sister and an absolutely beloved aunt. She took immense joy in supporting her nieces and nephews, celebrating their achievements, and simply being there for them. Her presence, her warmth, her wisdom – these were gifts to her family. She now joins her parents, Michael and Agnes Saloum, who passed before her.
She leaves behind a loving family who will miss her dearly: her sister, Patricia Saloum, who resides in Bethlehem; her brother, Michael Saloum Jr., and his wife, Deborah, from North Catasauqua. She was also a treasured aunt to Michael Saloum III, Andrew Saloum, and Christopher Saloum, along with his wife, Tiffany. And we can't forget her great-nephew, Cameron Saloum, who brought her so much joy.
To honor Susan's life, friends and family are invited to attend calling hours this Friday, May 3, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, at Connell Funeral Home, Inc., located at 201 E. 4th St., Bethlehem. A funeral service will follow directly at 11:00 AM at the funeral home, celebrating her remarkable journey. Following the service, Susan will be laid to rest at Holy Saviour Cemetery, Bethlehem. For those wishing to make a contribution in Susan’s memory, the family suggests donations to the Bethlehem Area School District Foundation, found at 1516 Sycamore St., Bethlehem, PA 18017. It's a fitting tribute, truly, to a woman who dedicated her life to education.
