Remembering P.P. Thankachan: A Pillar of Kerala Politics Passes Away at 88

Kerala is enveloped in a somber mood as it bids farewell to one of its most revered political figures, P.P. Thankachan. The veteran Congress leader and former Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly peacefully passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at the age of 88, succumbing to age-related ailments at a private hospital in Kochi.

Thankachan’s illustrious career spanned over five decades, leaving an indelible mark on the political landscape of Kerala.

Born in Perumbavoor, Ernakulam district, his journey into public service began with the vibrant student movements. He quickly rose through the ranks of the Kerala Students' Union (KSU), eventually becoming the President of its Ernakulam district committee, showcasing his early leadership prowess and commitment to democratic ideals.

His dedication to the Indian National Congress was unwavering.

Thankachan held various significant party positions throughout his life, including the President of the Ernakulam District Congress Committee (DCC), General Secretary, and later Vice-President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). These roles allowed him to shape party policies and strategies, contributing significantly to the Congress party's strength in the state.
