It's with a heavy heart, you know, that we share the news of James H. Ploughman's passing. Jim, as he was affectionately known by absolutely everyone, left us peacefully at the ripe old age of 87, surrounded by the quiet love of his family. He wasn't just a resident of Antioch; he was, in so many ways, a cornerstone, a true fixture whose absence will be deeply felt by all who had the good fortune to cross his path.
Born way back in 1936, right in the heart of Chicago, Jim carried that city's grit and warmth with him throughout his life. But it was in Antioch, the place he chose to call home for over sixty years, that he truly blossomed. He wasn't one for sitting still, not Jim. A master carpenter by trade, his hands crafted countless homes and memories, each nail hammered with a precision that spoke volumes about his dedication. You could say he built more than just structures; he built community, one perfectly fitted beam at a time.
Beyond his incredible talent with wood, Jim was a man of simple pleasures and profound joys. He absolutely adored the outdoors, finding solace and peace whether he was patiently fishing on the Chain O'Lakes or meticulously tending his bountiful garden. Oh, and the stories! He had a knack, truly, for spinning tales of Antioch's past, always with that twinkle in his eye and a warm, inviting laugh. He made history come alive, making you feel like you were right there alongside him.
But above all else, Jim's greatest pride and joy was, without a doubt, his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 62 years, Mary, who was truly his rock, his partner in every sense of the word. His legacy continues through his devoted children, David, Sarah, and Michael, who learned so much from his quiet strength and unwavering kindness. And let's not forget his cherished grandchildren, Emily, Jacob, Olivia, and Liam, who were constantly showered with his affection and wisdom. He truly created a beautiful, sprawling family tree.
Jim also leaves behind his dear sister, Joan, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss his steady presence. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Eleanor, and his brother, Robert, who are now, surely, welcoming him home.
We invite you to join us in celebrating Jim's remarkable life. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Strang Funeral Home of Antioch, located at 1055 Main St., Antioch, IL 60002. A Funeral Mass, a time for prayer and reflection, will take place on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at 10:00 AM at St. Peter Catholic Church, 557 Lake St., Antioch, IL 60002. Following the Mass, Jim will be laid to rest at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Antioch, a peaceful final resting place.
In lieu of flowers, if you're inclined, the family kindly requests memorial contributions be made to the Antioch Public Library District, a place Jim always held dear, or to the Lake County Forest Preserves, an organization dedicated to preserving the natural beauty he so loved. It would truly honor his memory.
