Remembering Gary A. Lundsberg: A Life of Service, Family, and Community

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary A. Lundsberg, a cherished husband, devoted father, adoring grandfather, and respected community pillar, who departed this life on February 20, 2024, at the age of 77. A long-time resident of Elmhurst, Illinois, Gary's legacy is woven into the fabric of both his professional landscape and the vibrant community he so passionately served.

Gary’s professional journey was a testament to his unwavering dedication and incredible work ethic.

For 36 years, he was a cornerstone of Commonwealth Edison (ComEd), embarking on his career as a meter reader and steadily climbing the ranks to achieve the distinguished position of Vice President of Division Operations. It was within the halls of ComEd that he also found his lifelong partner, Mary Jean.

Their love story spanned an incredible 55 years of marriage, a true partnership built on mutual respect and affection.

A proud patriot, Gary honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the formidable USS Forrestal. His commitment to service extended far beyond his military duty and professional life, reaching deep into the heart of his community.

Gary was an active and influential member of the Elmhurst Kiwanis Club, where he once served as president, tirelessly working to better the lives of those around him. His faith was also a guiding light, expressed through his dedicated service as an usher and member of the diaconate at Union Church of Hinsdale.

Furthermore, his altruistic spirit shone brightly in his contributions to the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Development Board, always striving to enhance local healthcare.

Beyond his myriad achievements and community commitments, Gary embraced life with a joyful spirit. He was an avid golfer, finding peace and camaraderie on the greens.

A true Chicagoan at heart, he was an ardent fan of all the city's major sports teams – the Bears, White Sox, Bulls, and Blackhawks – cheering them on with an infectious enthusiasm. Above all, Gary cherished time spent with his beloved family and embarked on countless memorable travels, creating a treasure trove of shared experiences.

Gary’s memory will be forever held dear by his loving wife, Mary Jean; his devoted children, Kristin (David) Nelson and Mark (Beth) Lundsberg; and his four cherished grandchildren, Madelyn, Jake, Kate, and Ben, who brought immense joy to his later years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Ethel, and his sister, Arlene Balke, joining them in eternal rest.

A visitation to honor Gary’s remarkable life will be held on Thursday, February 29th, followed by a funeral service on Friday, March 1st, both at the Union Church of Hinsdale.

A private interment will follow. Gary A. Lundsberg lived a life rich in purpose, love, and unwavering commitment, leaving an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He will be profoundly missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire.
