Dr. James 'Jim' Watkins White, a pillar of the Franklin community and a respected surgeon, passed away at 79. He leaves behind a legacy of dedicated medical service, family devotion, and cherished community involvement.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of a significant loss to our community, as Dr. James "Jim" Watkins White, a beloved surgeon, devoted family man, and truly impactful leader, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 31, 2024, at the age of 79. A lifelong resident of Franklin, Tennessee, Jim’s presence was deeply felt by countless individuals, leaving behind a legacy of care, dedication, and unwavering commitment.

Born on October 30, 1944, in Knoxville, Tennessee, Jim was the cherished son of Harry L. White and Mary Watkins White. From a young age, it was clear he was destined for a path of learning and service. He proudly walked the halls of Franklin High School, graduating with the class of 1962. His academic journey then led him to Vanderbilt University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1966, laying a strong foundation for what would become a distinguished medical career. Furthering his ambition, Jim pursued his medical degree at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, graduating in 1970.

Before dedicating his life to civilian medicine, Dr. White honorably served his country as a Captain in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, spending two years as a general medical officer. This period of service undoubtedly shaped his character, instilling in him a profound sense of duty that would carry through all aspects of his life.

Upon his return, Jim embarked on a remarkable career as a general surgeon, quickly becoming a cornerstone of the medical community in Williamson County. For three decades, from 1972 until his retirement in 2005, he was an integral part of the medical staff at Williamson Medical Center. His leadership was undeniable; he served as Chief of Staff, Chief of Surgery, and contributed significantly as a member of the Board of Trustees. Alongside his esteemed colleagues at Williamson County Surgical Associates, Dr. White’s expertise and compassionate approach touched countless lives, earning him immense respect from both patients and peers alike.

Beyond the operating room, Jim’s heart truly belonged to his family. He shared 54 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Sally Jordan White, a partnership built on love, mutual respect, and shared adventures. Together, they raised two wonderful children: Ashley White Martin, married to Brent, and James "Jimmy" W. White, Jr., married to Amy. Jim absolutely adored his four grandchildren—Claire and Camille Martin, and Ella and Watkins White—finding immense joy in every moment spent with them. He was preceded in death by his brother, Harry L. White, Jr., but leaves behind his dear sister, Margaret White Staley, and her husband Bob, along with several cherished nieces and nephews: Mary Watkins Staley Satterwhite (Bill), Robert W. Staley, Jennifer White Tipton (Bryan), and Harry L. White III (Kandi).

When he wasn't saving lives or spending time with his family, Jim was a man of diverse passions. An avid outdoorsman, he found peace and exhilaration in fishing and hunting. He enjoyed the camaraderie and challenge of a good round of golf, lost himself in the pages of a compelling book, and was a dedicated fan of the Tennessee Titans and Vanderbilt Commodores. His farm was a special sanctuary, a place where he loved to spend time, often accompanied by his beloved dogs. These were the moments, perhaps, where he truly recharged his spirit.

Jim's commitment extended far beyond his immediate family and profession, reaching deep into the fabric of the Franklin community. A faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Franklin, he served with distinction as both a Deacon and an Elder, embodying his strong spiritual convictions. He was also a dedicated member, and former President, of the Franklin Noon Rotary Club, where he was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow – a testament to his "Service Above Self." His leadership was also vital within the Williamson County Medical Society, where he served as President, and he was an active participant in both the Nashville Academy of Medicine and the Tennessee Medical Association. Truly, Jim was a man who gave tirelessly to improve the lives around him.

Friends and family are invited to gather for a visitation to celebrate Jim's life on Monday, June 10, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, at the First Presbyterian Church of Franklin. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM at the church, with Dr. Chris Joiner and Rev. Sally Hughes officiating, offering words of comfort and remembrance. A private burial will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Franklin, the Williamson Health Foundation, or the Franklin Noon Rotary Club. Jim's arrangements are being handled with care by Williamson Memorial Funeral Home.

Dr. James "Jim" Watkins White lived a full, impactful life, marked by unwavering dedication to his profession, profound love for his family, and tireless service to his community. He will be remembered for his skillful hands, his generous heart, and his quiet strength. He leaves behind a profound void, but also a rich tapestry of cherished memories and an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
