Reece Topley, the pacer for RCB, has sparked debate with his assessment of Virat Kohli's dismissal during the clash against KKR, branding it a 'grey area' in cricket. The incident unfolded on Sunday, April 21, at the Eden Gardens in the Indian Premier League, where Kohli's frustration was evident after being given out to Harshit Rana. Kohli's bat connected with a waist-high full toss, leading to a caught-out decision that left him visibly displeased.
Topley, speaking post-match, expressed astonishment at the unforeseen circumstances, emphasizing the use of measurements typically applied when batters are at their crease.
"The measurements are brought in to get rid of a grey area, and then you have something today that no one had thought of," Topley remarked.
According to Topley, Kohli's position outside his crease and the trajectory of the ball constituted a 'grey area,' especially considering the close margin in such decisions.
"He (Kohli) was obviously out of his crease, and the ball was over his hip high, then obviously he was out of his crease down the wicket. The measurement was taken with Virat inside the crease so it's a bit of a grey area," Topley explained.
RCB's defeat marked their sixth consecutive loss, essentially dimming their chances in the tournament. Despite the disappointment, Topley remained optimistic about the team's future performances.
"It's not absolute. We go about every game like we are going to win it and try the best of ourselves. We can finish with seven games and look back and say it was a respectful campaign," Topley commented.
Regarding Kohli's dismissal, Topley acknowledged the contentious nature of the decision, revealing the RCB camp's belief that Kohli shouldn't have been given out.
"I can throw this back to you saying what was your opinion. It's tough...two people can have two different opinions. In our camp, we feel like its a grey area, like uncharted territory, so probably you need more clarifications in the rules," Topley concluded.
