Quarterback Carousel: Austin Novosad Departs Oregon Amidst Crowded Room

Well, it seems the quarterback carousel just keeps on spinning in Eugene. The Oregon Ducks football program, already navigating a fascinatingly competitive QB room, is now set to lose a promising young talent. Austin Novosad, a true freshman who arrived with no small amount of hype just last year, is reportedly entering the NCAA transfer portal.

Pete Nakos over at On3 was the first to break this news, and frankly, it doesn't come as a huge shock when you consider the competitive landscape. Novosad, remember, was a highly-touted four-star recruit in the 2023 class, ranked among the nation's top quarterback prospects. Coming out of high school, he had his pick of programs, showcasing a strong arm and impressive potential. Yet, his time on the field as a Duck was, shall we say, rather limited. He saw action in just one contest, against Portland State, completing three of five passes for 18 yards and even tossing a touchdown – a glimpse of what he could do, certainly, but hardly enough to build momentum.

The truth is, Oregon's quarterback situation has become incredibly crowded, even with the departure of the venerable Bo Nix to the NFL. Head coach Dan Lanning and his staff didn't waste any time bringing in formidable talent. They landed Dillon Gabriel, a seasoned veteran transfer from Oklahoma, and then added Dante Moore, a former five-star prospect himself, from UCLA. Suddenly, Novosad found himself further down the depth chart than perhaps he'd envisioned, sitting behind not just Gabriel and Moore, but also Ty Thompson. For a young quarterback eager to develop and, more importantly, play, that's a tough pill to swallow.

This transfer, while perhaps expected given the circumstances, does open up another slot in Oregon's quarterback room. It's a stark reminder of the relentless nature of college football today, where players are always looking for the best fit for their career trajectory. As it stands, the Ducks' primary options under center are now Gabriel and Moore, both poised for a serious competition heading into the next season. They're joined by incoming 2024 signee Luke Moga and walk-on Michael Real.

Losing Novosad means one less arm in practice, one less option for the future, but it also reflects the reality of a program aiming for national championships – you attract top talent, and sometimes, tough decisions are made when the competition gets too fierce. It's always a shame to see a talented player move on, but you have to respect Austin's decision to seek a place where he can truly shine.
