Pune's Green Ganesh Utsav: Over 876 Tonnes of Nirmalya Collected, Setting New Environmental Benchmarks

This year, the city successfully collected an astonishing 876 tonnes of nirmalya – the revered floral and organic offerings – preventing a significant amount of waste from polluting its lifelines, the Mula and Mutha rivers.

This impressive figure not only surpasses previous years' collections but also underscores the growing ecological consciousness among Pune's residents.

In 2022, approximately 785 tonnes were collected, and in 2021, the number stood at around 720 tonnes. The consistent increase highlights a positive trend towards more responsible and eco-friendly religious observances, showcasing a collective desire to protect natural resources.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) played a pivotal role, establishing over 200 temporary nirmalya kalash (collection bins) strategically across the city, particularly near riverbanks and popular immersion sites. These bins provided accessible points for devotees to respectfully deposit their offerings, ensuring they were diverted from waterways.

Beyond the PMC's infrastructure, the heart of this initiative lay in the enthusiastic participation of numerous non-governmental organizations (NGOs), dedicated volunteers, and conscientious citizens.
