Listen to Story Australia captain Pat Cummins isn't really keen on the idea of having Steve Smith opening the batting for the side in Tests following David Warner's retirement. Warner brought the curtains down on his career following the SCG Test win over Pakistan and the Australian team management is on the lookout for a new opener.
The names of Cameron Green, Matt Renshaw and Marcus Harris have been floated around as potential candidates. However, Smith has emerged as a dark horse for the role, with teammate . , if the team management decides to go down that path. However, Cummins doesn't seem to be too thrilled by the idea.
Speaking to ABC Grandstand, as quoted by Cricbuzz, the Aussie skipper said he is pretty happy with Smith's contribution at No.4. "I'm pretty happy with [Smith's] output at No. 4," Cummins said after Australia sealed a 3 0 win over Pakistan with victory at the SCG. Cummins said that he doesn't want to disrupt the middle order of the side that has been performing well for them.
"Obviously Marnus [Labuschagne], Smudge [Smith], Trav [Head] and [Mitchell] Marsh have been pretty impressive at Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6. So first instinct isn't probably to disrupt that." Cummins went on to say that it would be tough to replicate the accomplishments of Warner at the top but asserted that people doing well in Shield cricket can step up to the plate.
"It's obviously going to be really hard to replicate Davey and what he's brought to it. I think you look for who is best placed to score runs, really. But I think, in Test cricket, there are some things that remain true and that is you've got to be putting the pressure on the opposition.
You've got to be ticking over the scoreboard. Not always but most of the time you've got to keep the scoreboard moving along. "There are considerations, but realistically, if anyone is scoring runs in Shield cricket, it's probably a good sign they can do it at the next level," the Australian captain added..
