Montgomery Softball Kicks Off Season with Coach Upshaw's Milestone 100th Win!

What a start to the new softball season for Montgomery High School! Wednesday wasn't just another game; it was a truly special occasion, marking a significant milestone for their beloved Head Coach, Bryan Upshaw. In a hard-fought contest against Hillsborough, the Cougars triumphed with a 6-3 victory, pushing Coach Upshaw into the coveted 100-win club. Just imagine the scene, the palpable excitement as the final out was recorded, knowing that a decade of dedication had culminated in such a moment!

It was fitting, really, that his 100th victory came on opening day. Coach Upshaw, now in his tenth season leading the Montgomery squad, had been sitting on 99 career wins going into the game. The anticipation must have been incredible, both for him and for his players, who clearly wanted to make this game memorable. And boy, did they deliver!

The Cougars got things rolling early, putting two runs on the board in the second inning, followed by a strong three-run burst in the third. Hillsborough certainly didn't make it easy, though, chipping away with a run in the first and two more in the third to keep things tight. But Montgomery, ever resilient, added another insurance run in the sixth, sealing their well-deserved 6-3 win.

Offensively, several players really shone. Ella Rossetti was a standout at the plate, lashing an RBI double and a single, ultimately crossing home twice herself. Mia Kuczynski stepped up with a crucial two-run single, while Maya Desai contributed two singles and scored twice. Not to be outdone, Jess Rubine also chipped in with an RBI double. It was a true team effort, demonstrating the kind of synergy and determination that defines a successful program.
