Mass. coast braces for more rain, flooding; rivers remain swollen

As many areas of Massachusetts and New England are still drying out from heavy rains earlier this week, the area is expected to see even more rain overnight. River and coastal flooding, as well as strong and damaging winds, are all possible from the storm, which will move in late Friday. StormTeam 5 said the storm will bring another 1 2 inches of rain.

Along the coast of northern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire, rocks and sand that was thrown over seawalls during Wednesday’s storm were still visible. The next storm will bring a 3 foot storm surge. Public works crews in Hampton, New Hampshire, were patching storm drains damaged by the storm.

They also pre positioned signs in case they need to close roads again because of flooding expected on Saturday. Further north in Rye, New Hampshire, a berm along Route 1A was rebuilt after being washed away. “This whole berm was completely gone. It was crazy. I've never seen it that much,” Rye resident Dave Walsh said.

“They just pushed back off the road, and they brought some sand in. They rebuilt it.” Hampton police said the roads leading to Hampton Beach will be closed starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. They're urging people who live in low lying areas to consider relocating until the water recedes or at least move their cars to higher ground.

Meanwhile, inland, all eyes are on already swollen rivers. The Nashawtuc Road Bridge has been closed to motor vehicles, but pedestrians can still cross. The Sudbury River is so high that MassDOT advised it stays closed until the water subsides and there's an underwater inspection of the bridge..
