Letter: A darkness hangs over Minnesota

Twenty eight years ago (December 15, 1995) the Minnesota Supreme Court established a state constitutional “right” to abortion. The decision, Doe v Gomez, also obligated Minnesota taxpayers to pay for abortion. Under the Medical Assistance and MinnesotaCare Programs, abortion and abortion related services are all covered by the state.

Since 1995, Minnesota taxpayers have funded more than 100,000 abortions at a cost of over $30 million. The court's decision was unconstitutional as it disregarded the religious beliefs of many Minnesota taxpayers like me who find abortion intrinsically evil. On Jan 31, 2023, Gov. Walz signed the Protect Reproductive Options Act making abortion on demand legal at any time before birth in Minnesota.

The legislature and governor felt it was necessary to codify abortion "rights" into state law because they feared another Supreme Court decision (like Dobbs) could ban abortion nationally. Gov. Walz was well pleased in making Minnesota an abortion haven and joining the immoral gang of sanctuary states.

But the anti life laws in Minnesota don't stop there. Lawmakers also repealed the Positive Alternatives Act which funded several life affirming programs throughout the state. These pregnancy resource programs helped women who chose life. It’s as if the “choice” in Minnesota better be the right one – because if you choose life, they will not help you or your newborn baby.

Why is Minnesota so biased in favor of paying for ending a pregnancy by abortion over providing funds for those who choose life? I don’t think I should be obligated to pay for the consequences of other people's sexual activities. And why is abortion in the same category as an emergency appendectomy or having a knee replaced? My medical bills are my responsibility.

Why is paying for an abortion everyone else’s responsibility? ADVERTISEMENT Abortion is an elective procedure. Most health care plans will only pay for elective surgeries that are medically necessary. We all know that most abortions are not done for emergency health reasons. A recent letter to the Forum praises Minnesota stating,” Thank God for the decent states like Minnesota, where folks stand tall for truth, justice and the American way.

They’re pro woman, pro child and pro choice”. Nothing could be further from the truth! I feel sorry for someone who categorizes abortion as “pro child.” Letters Letter: Vote for those who are pro woman, pro child and pro choice "Thank God for the decent states like Minnesota, where folks stand tall for truth, justice, and the American way.

They’re pro woman, pro child, and pro choice," writes Alan Davis of Moorhead. Dec 14, 2023 · By Alan Davis It’s also baffling that my conservatice opinions are described as “far right.” My views on abortion today have never changed and surprisingly were not considered extreme 20 years ago.

For most Americans, abortion on demand is far left extremism. So who really is the extremist? Minnesota is a beautiful state, yet there is a darkness that hangs over it. The state is enslaved in a culture of death. Their laws not only promote abortion, they make its citizens pay for them. Mother Teresa once said, “Any country (or state in this case) that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want”.

When comparing the Star of Bethlehem with the ‘star’ on the new Minnesota state flag, there is a somber difference. Below the Minnesota star is an empty crib. Ken Sims lives in Moorhead. .
