There is no bad blood between these NFL WAGs. Kelly Stafford, the wife of Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, sent a text to model Christen Harper, who’s engaged to Lions quarterback Jared Goff, after she was booed while on the sidelines with her four young daughters at Detroit’s 24 23 wild card win against Los Angeles on Sunday.
“Actually, I was texting Christen Harper this morning,” Kelly said during the latest installment of her “The Morning After” podcast . “And this is what I said, ‘You want your fans to be that passionate. That’s what you want. You don’t want to be on the other side of it, but if they are your fans, hell yeah! Let’s go!” Kelly was discussing the fan behavior at Ford Field, where Stafford played home games during his 12 season tenure with the Lions, who selected him with the first overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.
Kelly recalled being booed by some Lions fans while walking on the sidelines with her daughters — Tyler, 3, Hunter, 5, and 6 year old twins Sawyer and Chandler — adding that Hunter started crying. She also recalled Stafford being booed when he ran onto the field in Detroit, and when he took a hard hit in the third quarter , which resulted in him being taken to the medical tent.
“Listen, did I think we were gonna come in there and Matthew was gonna get a standing ovation?” Absolutely not,” Kelly said. “There’s no chance. “I think in this scenario, you hear the boos. They’re louder than anything else. But this is a playoff football game. We’re coming in as the enemies… You were specifically booing my husband when he ran on that field, and that’s OK.
I’m OK with that. I don’t want excuses being made. A post shared by Christen Harper (@christenharper) “My girls and I are not playing the game,” she added. “My girls are not getting booed, I am, and I can handle it, but when I have my girls next to me there is something to be said, like, maybe not.” Kelly explained that she was booed while visiting the Lions sideline to talk to team owner Martha Ford.
“Hunter was in tears,” she said. “I go, ‘guys they’re not booing you, they’re booing mommy… They want their Lions to win.’ “… Sawyer looked at me and goes “Well we’re not playing the sport” and I said, ‘That is very true Sawyer, but mommy’s been involved with a lot of things here and that’s what they’re booing.” Kelly also expressed her frustration over Stafford’s post game press conference, when he was asked how he felt about the city of Detroit, considering his history, after the Lions won their first playoff game in 32 years.
“I’m happy for the players,” Stafford said. “I’m happy for those guys.” Kelly Stafford seemingly back pedals from her claim that her children were boo’ed last Sunday at Ford Field “My girls are not getting boo’ed, I am.” pic.twitter.com/PqughKtQIh Some believed Stafford’s answer was a dig at the city of Detroit, which Kelly disagreed.
“My husband is human,” she said while addressing the situation. “His team just got knocked out of the playoff, you give him five minutes to digest that — but you don’t think he heard the boos and heard the cheers when he was down because he did. I know he did. “He’s also a competitor, and he’s mad at this point that they did not win that game — and you give him five minutes to digest that and you ask that question? “No other quarterback is being asked ‘if you’re happy for the other city that just one,’ no one.
And I don’t think it’s a fair question to ask. It’s not a question of whether my husband wants it for the city. “It’s the question of giving him a second to digest what the f–k just happened and then allowing him to answer the question…. I thought it was a very good answer. Do you want him to jump up and down and cheer right now for the people in the city? I couldn’t imagine.” Stafford, who played with a bandaged hand after splitting it open on a collision with a defender’s helmet, finished 25 of 36 for 367 yards and two touchdowns.
The Rams had a 10 7 record to finish the regular season before they were eliminated by the Lions. Detroit, which hadn’t won a playoff game since 1992, will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Divisional Round on Jan. 21. The Bucs blew out the Eagles 32 9 in the wild card round on Monday..
