Karnataka Braces for Monsoon Fury: Schools Shut, Red Alert Issued Across Districts

Karnataka is currently grappling with the formidable force of the monsoon, as relentless downpours have prompted authorities to declare holidays for schools in several districts. A 'Red Alert' has been sounded, signaling extreme caution and preparedness across coastal and Malnad regions, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated.

The decision to close educational institutions rests with the respective District Commissioners, who are closely monitoring the escalating weather situation.

Districts like Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Kodagu, and Chikkamagaluru are under a red alert, bracing for significant rainfall that could lead to widespread disruption.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this spell of intense weather is expected to persist from July 26 to July 30.

Their forecast for July 27 specifically highlighted isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Coastal Karnataka and its adjoining Malnad region, necessitating urgent precautionary measures.

Beyond the red alert zones, other areas are also feeling the monsoon's grip. Shivamogga and Hassan districts are under an 'Orange Alert,' indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall, while Mysuru district has been issued a 'Yellow Alert,' advising residents to stay vigilant.

In response to the severe weather outlook, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai convened an urgent meeting with the District Commissioners of the rain-affected regions.

He issued stern directives, emphasizing the critical need for immediate precautionary measures, the establishment of relief centers, and the prompt provision of compensation to those affected. Furthermore, the deployment of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams has been ordered to assist in rescue and relief operations, ensuring a swift and coordinated response to any emergencies.

A family in Koppa, Chikkamagaluru, tragically lost their home due to the incessant downpour and subsequent landslides. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported, underscoring the importance of timely warnings and evacuation efforts. Authorities continue to urge residents to remain indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and heed all advisories issued by local administrations to ensure their safety during this challenging weather period.
