OTTAWA—Canada is siding with Israel in its defence against allegations of genocide in the ongoing war in Gaza, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau breaking the government’s silence over the contentious case heard this week at the United Nations’ court in The Hague. Appearing at a press conference in Guelph, Ont., Trudeau praised the role of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) but suggested his government does not agree with the case against Israel that South Africa launched in late December.
"Our whole hearted support for the (UN world court) and its processes does not mean that we support the premise of the case brought forward by South Africa," Trudeau said Friday. A spokesperson from Trudeau’s office later confirmed Canada does not support South Africa’s case. The prime minister said the government would release more details about its position later in the day..
