John W. Conley: A Life of Unwavering Service, Family Devotion, and Enduring Spirit

It is with profound sadness yet immense gratitude for a life exceptionally well-lived that we announce the passing of John W. Conley, a true pillar of the Glastonbury community, who departed peacefully just shy of his 83rd birthday on May 24, 2024. Born on May 25, 1941, John's remarkable journey was defined by an unwavering dedication—to his country, his beloved community, and, above all, his cherished family.

John proudly served his nation as a U.S.

Marine Corps veteran from 1959 to 1963, a commitment that deeply instilled in him a lifelong sense of duty, discipline, and patriotism. Following his honorable military service, he pursued higher education, earning his degree from Bentley College, a foundation that prepared him for a distinguished career in public service.

For 33 years, John dedicated his professional life to the State of Connecticut, working for the Department of Revenue Services (DRS).

His diligent work ethic and exceptional leadership saw him rise steadily through the ranks, eventually retiring as an Assistant Director. Yet, his commitment to public service extended far beyond his professional role, touching the very fabric of his hometown.

Glastonbury was truly the beneficiary of John's tireless efforts and sagacious leadership.

For an astounding 23 years, he served with distinction on the Glastonbury Board of Finance, including an impressive 15-year tenure as its Chairman. His fiscal prudence, sharp intellect, and steady hand guided the town through numerous financial challenges and successes, leaving an indelible mark on its economic health and stability.

He also generously lent his expertise to the Glastonbury Retirement Commission, ensuring the well-being of the town's retirees.

Beyond his significant public contributions, John was a man of diverse interests and deep passions. He was an avid reader, particularly drawn to the sweeping narratives of history, always eager to expand his knowledge and understanding of the world.

A true sports enthusiast, he was a loyal and vocal fan of the UCONN Huskies, the Boston Red Sox, and the NY Giants, celebrating their victories and lamenting their defeats with equal fervor, often sharing these moments with family and friends.

Golf was another great love, and he cherished his 50-year membership at the Glastonbury Hills Country Club, where he undoubtedly created countless memories and forged lasting friendships on the greens, enjoying both the sport and the camaraderie it brought.

However, the absolute cornerstone of John's life was his family.

He shared a beautiful and enduring partnership with his devoted wife, Patricia (Pat) Connelly Conley. Together, they built a loving home and raised three wonderful children: Megan, Erin, and Michael Conley. John delighted immensely in his role as a grandfather to Katelyn O'Meara (Tim), Kyle O'Meara, Bridget Lattimer, Sean Lattimer, Olivia Conley, and John Conley, and experienced the profound joy of becoming a great-grandfather to Owen O'Meara.

His sister, Mary Elizabeth (Conley) Ryan, predeceased him, but he leaves behind his brother-in-law Edward Ryan, and a host of cherished nieces and nephews, all of whom will deeply miss his warmth, wisdom, and unwavering support.

John and Pat also shared a love for travel, exploring new places and creating cherished memories together, particularly during their peaceful winters spent in the sunny climes of Naples, Florida, a welcome respite after years of dedicated work.

His passing marks the end of an era for his family and the town of Glastonbury.

John's legacy of selfless service, unwavering integrity, and profound love will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. He lived a life rich in purpose and dedicated to the betterment of others, leaving the world a better place through his presence.

Friends and loved ones are invited to pay their respects at Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Ave, Glastonbury, on Monday, May 27, 2024, from 4-7 PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated to honor John's life on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at 10 AM at St. Dunstan Church, 1345 Manchester Rd, Glastonbury, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Glastonbury.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to honor John's spirit of generosity and service.
