The charges include three felony and six misdemeanor counts, including failing to file and pay taxes, tax evasion and filing false tax returns, charges that carry a maximum sentence of up to 17 years in prison.
Biden, who has since paid the back taxes, instead spent the money on an “extravagant lifestyle,” including “drugs, escorts and girlfriends, luxury hotels and rental properties, exotic cars, clothing and other items of personal nature,” prosecutors wrote in the indictment. Key Background Biden was charged by Special Counsel David Weiss’ office in December after a plea deal his lawyers negotiated with the Justice Department unraveled last year over a disagreement about future immunity in their long running investigation into his foreign business dealings that was expanded to encompass his taxes.
He was also charged in federal court in Delaware with purchasing a firearm while he was using drugs. He has pleaded not guilty in that case.
