How Apple Watch saved this student from carbon monoxide poisoning

Delaware student rescued from carbon monoxide poisoning using emergency SOS feature on Apple Watch. Natalie Nasatka, experiencing symptoms like dizziness and exhaustion, used the feature to contact emergency services before losing consciousness. Fire Department arrived and confirmed dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide in her apartment.

Suspected cause: faulty heater. Apple Watch users can activate emergency SOS by pressing and holding side button, location shared with emergency services, and text message sent to emergency contacts. Although the Apple Watch is known for saving people due to its abnormal heart rate alerts or fall detection, it is also proven to be a communication device in emergencies.

In Delaware, a student was rescued from carbon monoxide poisoning with the help of the Emergency SOS feature on her Apple Watch. Natalie Nasatka, the student, as reported by CBS, was experiencing symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, such as dizziness and exhaustion, when she used the Emergency SOS feature on her Apple Watch to contact emergency services just before losing consciousness.

Nasatka described the incident as "extremely scary" and expressed her gratitude for being alive. She lost consciousness during the incident and felt extremely exhausted beforehand, with blurry vision. "I was feeling extremely exhausted," Nasatka said. "My vision was getting blurry." However, before passing out, Nasatka was able to hit the SOS button on her watch, which sent an emergency call to 911.

After the fire department arrived, Nasatka regained consciousness in an ambulance with the help of oxygen. "When I heard the firefighters yell out 'fire department' and they yanked me out of bed, I just started crying and saying 'I want to live. I want to live,'" she said.

"I've been riding waves of emotions." Upon conducting further tests, the fire department confirmed that the levels of carbon monoxide in Nasatka's apartment were dangerously high. She mentioned that the fire department monitor detected 80 parts per million of carbon monoxide in her apartment, which is an alarmingly high reading.

She suspects that the gas leak was caused by a faulty heater, which is one of the primary culprits for carbon monoxide poisoning during the winter season.
