Heinrich Klaasen retires from 'favourite format' Test cricket

Listen to Story 32 year old Heinrich Klaasen announced his retirement from Test cricket on Monday, January 8, coming up with an emotional statement on social media. Klaasen's decision came after he was overlooked for the recent 2 match Test series against India. Heinrich Klaasen, one of the finest middle order batters in ODI cricket, has played only 4 Tests over 4 years.

His most recent assignment in whites for India came when he kept wickets for South Africa in a home Test against the West Indies in March 2023. "After a few sleepless nights wondering if I am making the right decision, I have decided to Retire from RED Ball cricket. It’s a difficult decision that I have made because it is by far my favourite format of the game," Klaasen said in a statement on social media.

Klaasen's retirement comes days after their former captain . Elgar led South Africa in his farewell Test against India in Cape Town. Klaasen is a seasoned first class player, having played 85 games and scoring 5347 runs at a stellar average of 46. He hit 12 hundreds and 24 fifties in his career.

Klaasen was considered as a better batter than most wicketkeepers on the circuit in South Africa, but South Africa preferred Kyle Verreynne for the "The battles that I faced on and off the field has made me the cricketer I am today. It has been a great journey and I am glad I could have represented my Country.

In my opinion it was the most precious Cap I have ever been handed. "Thanks to everyone who has played a part in my Red Ball Career and Shaped me into the Cricketer I am today. But for now a new challenge awaits and looking forward to it," he added. South Africa will next play a 2 match series in New Zealand in February.

The Proteas have named a young squad with as many as 7 uncapped players for the tour, a decision that irked many in the cricket fraternity. The big stars, including Klaasen, were not available as they are gearing up for SA20, the second edition of the T20 league, starting January 10..
