Goa Shaken: Prominent Activist Brutally Attacked in Panaji; CM Vows Swift Justice

A wave of shock and outrage has swept across Goa following a brutal assault on prominent social activist Mahesh Mhambre. The incident, which occurred on the outskirts of Panaji, has drawn widespread condemnation and urgent calls for justice, with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant swiftly assuring strict action against the culprits.

Mhambre, a well-known voice against illegalities and corruption in the state, was returning home from a temple near the Kala Academy when he was ambushed by a group of six individuals.

The attackers, who Mhambre alleges were lying in wait, launched a vicious assault, leaving him with significant injuries to his face and head.

Recounting the terrifying ordeal, Mhambre stated that he managed to identify four of his assailants, prominently naming his former business partner, Sandesh Kalangutkar.

According to Mhambre, the attack is deeply rooted in a long-standing and bitter business dispute with Kalangutkar. However, he also strongly believes his activism – his unwavering fight against various illegal activities – played a crucial role in making him a target.

"This wasn't just a random act of violence; it was a deliberate attempt to silence me," Mhambre reportedly told authorities, highlighting previous threats and intimidation tactics he has faced.

The activist promptly filed a complaint with the Panaji police, who have launched an investigation into the matter.

The news of the assault quickly reached the highest echelons of the state government. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant addressed the incident with gravity, unequivocally condemning the violence.

"Such acts of violence against anyone, particularly against individuals who stand up for what is right, will not be tolerated in Goa," CM Sawant stated, adding a firm promise of swift and stringent action against all those involved in the brutal attack.

The assault on Mhambre has reignited crucial conversations about the safety and security of activists who often put themselves at risk in their pursuit of social justice.

Various civil society groups and political leaders have voiced their concern, urging a comprehensive and transparent investigation, as well as enhanced protection for activists operating in the state.
