In case you were wondering … the answer is no. The Giants will not be investigating bringing Bill Belichick back into the fold, now that Belichick and the Patriots on Thursday parted ways after 24 years together and six Super Bowl triumphs. The Giants maintain a good relationship with Belichick and Belichick holds the Giants in high regard , based on his ultra successful run with the franchise for more than decade (1979 90), mostly as Bill Parcells’ defensive coordinator for two Super Bowl championship teams.
Belichick should be a first ballot Hall of Famer and he has made it clear he wants to continue coaching, making him an attractive, although older (71) free agent coaching candidate, and he figures to have options. One of those options will not be the Giants. They have a head coach, Brian Daboll, and are not exploring other options at this time.
In what was a momentous week in the NFL and college football, Nick Saban announced he was leaving his position as the head coach at Alabama and whenever Saban’s name is mentioned, his almost connection with the Giants is appropriate to recall. When the Giants were in the market for a head coach following the 1996 season, they made strong inquiries about hiring Saban, then the head coach at Michigan State.
It did not work out and the Giants hired Jim Fassel. After the 2015 season, the Giants, after 12 years, parted ways with Tom Coughlin and Saban — coming off winning his fifth national championship (one at LSU, four at Alabama) sent word through intermediaries that he was interested in hearing about the Giants’ job.
The Giants had some interest, as well, but ultimately nothing materialized and Ben McAdoo, who had been the offensive coordinator under Coughlin, was hired as the head coach. In case you were wondering … Saban is expected to retire and the Giants will not make a third inquiry into his availability..
