Future Heroes in Training: Moose Jaw Students Tackle Fire Safety with Hands-On Thrills

Moose Jaw's next generation of heroes recently stepped into the boots of real firefighters, trading textbooks for fire hoses during an unforgettable Fire Prevention Week experience. As autumn leaves heralded the annual observance from October 8th to 14th, the Moose Jaw Fire Department opened its training facility doors to eager Grade 5 and 6 students from across the city, providing a thrilling and vital hands-on approach to fire safety.

Far from a dry lecture, this was an immersive adventure designed to instill crucial life-saving skills.

Each station offered a unique challenge, transforming abstract concepts of fire safety into tangible, memorable lessons. Students didn't just hear about fire safety; they lived it, learning directly from the dedicated men and women who protect their community.

One of the foundational lessons involved mastering the 'stop, drop, and roll' technique, a critical skill for anyone whose clothing might catch fire.

Adjacent to this, children practiced identifying and navigating clear escape routes, a fundamental component of any home fire safety plan. They were taught the importance of knowing at least two ways out of every room and having a pre-determined meeting place outside.

The excitement truly ignited when students got to tackle a controlled propane fire with actual fire extinguishers.

Under careful supervision, they learned the P.A.S.S. method (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep), experiencing firsthand the power and responsibility of wielding this essential safety tool. The roar of the flames and the hiss of the extinguisher made for an impactful demonstration of how quickly a small fire can be brought under control with proper knowledge.

Students, safely harnessed, had the chance to ascend a ladder, gaining a unique perspective and understanding of what firefighters face. A particularly poignant part of the day was the 'burn trailer' experience.

Simulating the disorienting conditions of a smoke-filled room, this station taught students how to stay low and crawl their way to safety, emphasizing the immediate dangers of smoke and the critical need for quick, decisive action. Firefighter Bob Scott reiterated the core message throughout the day: "Knowing your exit routes and having a meeting place is the key to fire safety."
