Fourth hypothermia related death recorded in Multnomah County

Multnomah County on Tuesday reported two new suspected deaths from hypothermia, bringing the number of people who have died to nine during the spate of freezing temperatures, high winds and snow. A man was found dead Monday in Northeast Portland, within the 97211 ZIP code covering the Woodlawn, Vernon and King neighborhoods, and another man was found dead Monday in Southeast Portland, within the 97214 ZIP code covering Buckman, Sunnyside and Hosford Abernethy neighborhoods, according to the county.
Multnomah County officials previously reported that in separate incidents over the weekend. One man was found dead Friday in Northeast Portland and another man was found dead Saturday in North Portland. It will take several weeks to months before the medical examiner’s office can confirm the deaths are related to the freezing temperatures, according to county officials.
In Washington County, at a Tigard retirement community, police said. She was found dead in her room in the Summerfield Estates on Monday morning. in Lake Oswego and Portland when trees fell on people’s homes. A tree toppled onto one person inside their Lake Oswego house and another tree fell on an RV in Southeast Portland.
Two women in their 70s also died in a as well, though firefighters said it wasn’t immediately clear if they had started the fire to keep warm. Freezing rain began falling in the Portland area around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and is expected to continue overnight before slowly transitioning to rain between 10 a.m and noon Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Portland.
