Elon Musk's Starlink launches six satellites that will connect to mobile phones

“Note, this only supports ~7Mb per beam and the beams are very big, so while this is a great solution for locations with no cellular connectivity, it is not meaningfully competitive with existing terrestrial cellular networks,” Musk noted in his post.Still, this is a big step in bridging the digital divide and bringing mobile access to remote and underserved areas around the globe.

On its website, Starlink notes that “Direct to Cell works with existing LTE phones wherever you can see the sky. No changes to hardware, firmware, or special apps are required, providing seamless access to text, voice, and data.” While the technology is promising, hurdles remain. Starlink needs to partner with mobile network operators (MNOs) to integrate their services into existing cellular networks.

Additionally, concerns exist regarding potential congestion and interference with existing satellite communication systems. Starlink has partnered with telecom service providers in the US, Australia, Canada, Switzerland, New Zealand, Japan and Chile. There have been reports about Starlink in talks with network service providers in India as well.

However, no major announcement has been made regarding that but Starlink is likely to be made available in India as well. The impact of Starlink's latest satellite launch extends beyond just mobile phone connectivity. The satellites are poised to contribute to a wide range of applications, including improved broadband services for homes, businesses, and various industries.
