Hold us accountable by rating this article's fairness Donald Trump has shared allegations that Fulton County District Attorney had an "improper" relationship with a special prosecutor involved in the Georgia election interference case. In a series of posts on Truth Social, the former president asked his followers if they had seen the "revelation" involving from Michael Roman, one of 18 people indicted alongside Trump in Willis' sprawling RICO investigation into alleged criminal attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.
The document from Roman's lawyer Ashleigh Merchant, citing unnamed "sources" and not backed up by evidence, alleged that Willis hired a man she was in a relationship with, Nathan Wade, as special prosecutor in her investigation. The filings accuse Willis and Wade of having an "improper, clandestine personal relationship" during the case, which included taking vacations together.
Merchant also alleges that Willis hired Wade to work on the case without the required approval by the county, and is asking for the case against Roman to be dismissed as a result. Roman, a former White House aide to Trump, has pleaded not guilty to seven counts in the Georgia case. Trump has pleaded not guilty to 13 felony counts over allegations he in Georgia, and has also asked a Georgia judge to throw out Willis' case against him, arguing that he is "Has everybody seen the revelation, just announced in the Great State of Georgia, that the Fulton County D.A., Fani Willis, who Criminally Indicted your Favorite President, ME(!), & many other Innocent People/Patriots, HIRED & EXORBITANTLY PAID a 'romantic partner' to prosecute the 45th President of the United States of America, & then 'financially benefited from their relationship,'" Trump wrote on Truth Social.
"In other words, he was paid a 'fortune,' & then took 'Beautiful' Fani on expensive, but all paid for by Georgia, vacations to faraway lands!" Trump also cited , which first reported on the court filings, in his social media posts. According to the filing, Wade has been paid nearly $654,000 in legal fees since he was hired to work on Willis' case in January 2022.
The filing also alleges that Willis and Wade had traveled together to Napa Valley and Florida while working on the case, with Wade also purchasing cruise tickets to the Caribbean for the pair from Norwegian and Royal Caribbean cruise lines. "Accordingly, the district attorney and the special prosecutor have violated laws regulating the use of public monies, suffer from irreparable conflicts of interest, and have violated their oaths of office under the Georgia Rules of Professional Conduct and should be disqualified from prosecuting this matter," the filing said.
Willis' office has been contacted for comment via email. has sought comment from Wade via a form on his law firm's website. The court filings do not include documentation of the cruise purchases, nor any other details to back up their allegations of an improper relationship between Willis and Wade.
Clark D. Cunningham, a law and ethics professor at Georgia State University, questioned why the filings from Roman's legal team did not back up their claims with proof. "If Roman's lawyer has actual evidence of an improper relationship between Willis and Wade, it was incumbent on her to make that part of her motion, such as by attaching sworn affidavits from witnesses with personal knowledge or authenticated documents," Cunningham told Chris Timmons, a former Georgia prosecutor, told News that if the claims are true, it won't put any attempt to prosecute Trump or the other defendants in jeopardy, but it "might result in some disqualification of prosecutors moving forward."
