Devastating 4-Alarm Fire Displaces Dozens in Thorncliffe Park Condo

That's precisely what unfolded for residents of two Thorncliffe Park condos, primarily affecting 1102 Don Mills Road, as a truly stubborn fire took hold and simply refused to be extinguished.

The alarm first rang out around 2:40 p.m. on Tuesday, reporting a fire on the 10th floor of the building. But this wasn't just any fire; it rapidly escalated, eventually spreading through the upper floors and right up to the roof. Firefighters, bless their tireless efforts, were on the scene in full force, quickly escalating it to a four-alarm situation. It became clear very quickly that this wasn't going to be a quick job.

As Tuesday melted into Wednesday morning, the crews were still there, battling the blaze relentlessly. High winds, unfortunately, were no friend to them, fanning the flames and making an already tough situation even more precarious. Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg explained some of the complexities: older building construction, a flat roof, and open attic spaces all conspired against rapid containment. It's just one of those scenarios where the fire finds every nook and cranny to spread.

The human toll is significant. Initially, authorities reported around 20 to 30 families being displaced. But as the hours wore on and the damage became clearer, that number unfortunately swelled to more than 50 families from 1102 Don Mills Road alone. While no residents reported serious injuries – which is a huge relief, frankly – one brave firefighter did sustain minor injuries. TTC buses were even brought in to offer temporary shelter, a small comfort in a moment of great uncertainty.
