Delhi's Green Heart: DDA Kicks Off Pivotal Yamuna Floodplain Demarcation

In a significant stride towards environmental protection and urban planning, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is set to embark on the crucial physical demarcation of the Yamuna floodplains starting September 15. This extensive exercise, spanning from Wazirabad to Jaitpur, aims to clearly define the boundaries of the ecologically sensitive zone, a vital step in the long-term project for the 'Rejuvenation of River Yamuna'.

The initiative comes after directives from the Yamuna Rejuvenation Committee and reflects persistent efforts to address encroachment and environmental degradation along the river.

Previous attempts at such a comprehensive demarcation were stalled due to various logistical challenges, making this upcoming drive particularly important for the capital's ecological future.

Utilizing state-of-the-art Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) technology alongside high-resolution drone imagery, the DDA, in close coordination with the Revenue Department and the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, will meticulously map approximately 9,700 hectares of floodplain area.

This advanced approach is expected to provide precise data, helping to accurately identify unauthorized constructions and ensure the pristine nature of the floodplains is restored and protected.

The physical demarcation is a foundational step. Once the boundaries are clearly established and recorded, the DDA plans to develop a comprehensive land use plan specifically for the floodplains.

This plan will not only detail strategies for the removal of existing encroachments but also outline measures for ecological restoration, including afforestation, creation of wetlands, and development of green public spaces, all while ensuring sustainable management of the riverine ecosystem.

For years, the absence of clear, physical boundaries has posed significant challenges in safeguarding the Yamuna floodplains.

This ambiguity often led to difficulties in preventing illegal construction and implementing effective conservation strategies. With the upcoming demarcation, authorities hope to gain a definitive tool to enforce environmental regulations, protect the river's natural flow, and enhance its biodiversity.
