Suffolk Bids Farewell to Roy E. 'Res' Spears III, A Pillar of Family, Business, and Community

Suffolk mourns the loss of Roy E. 'Res' Spears III, a devoted family man, visionary business leader, and tireless community servant. His unwavering commitment and warm spirit touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on his hometown and beyond.

It is with a profound sense of sorrow, yet immense gratitude for a life well-lived, that we share the news of Roy E. "Res" Spears III’s peaceful passing. Res, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and a true cornerstone of the Suffolk community, left us at his home on November 27, 2023, surrounded by the love and comfort of his devoted family. He was 67 years old, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Born and raised right here in Suffolk, Virginia, Res was the beloved son of the late Roy E. Spears Jr. and Elizabeth "Betsy" Lee Spears. His roots ran deep in the soil of his hometown, a connection that would define much of his life's work and dedication. He honed his academic skills early on, graduating from Nansemond-Suffolk Academy in 1974 before venturing to Georgia Tech, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Management in 1978.

Upon his graduation, Res returned to Suffolk, stepping seamlessly into the family business, Spears Supply Company. This wasn't just a job; it was a legacy. For an remarkable 45 years, he dedicated himself to the company, a prominent industrial supply distributor serving the entire Hampton Roads region. His steadfast commitment and innate leadership eventually saw him ascend to the role of President. Under his thoughtful guidance, Spears Supply Company not only flourished but became a testament to his vision and unwavering dedication.

Beyond his impactful professional life, Res was truly a pillar of the Suffolk community, giving generously of his time and talents. He was a lifelong and active member of Suffolk Presbyterian Church, where he faithfully served as an elder. His commitment extended far and wide, touching numerous local organizations. He proudly served as a past president of the Suffolk Rotary Club, contributed his expertise as a board member of the Suffolk Industrial Development Authority, and offered his insights on the Suffolk Planning Commission. Moreover, he remained deeply connected to his alma mater, serving on the board of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.

When he wasn't dedicating himself to business or community, Res pursued his passions with an infectious enthusiasm. He was, by all accounts, an avid hunter, a patient fisherman, and a keen golfer, always eager for a round on the links. He cherished his time spent unwinding at the Outer Banks, finding peace and joy in its coastal embrace. One of his most treasured traditions was his annual trip with friends to the Canadian goose blind, a time for camaraderie and shared adventure. But perhaps closest to his heart was the pure delight he found in the company of his grandchildren, William Roy and Elizabeth Grace, creating precious, lasting memories with them that will be forever treasured.

At the very heart of Res’s world was his beloved wife of 43 years, Brenda Parker Spears. Their partnership was a beautiful testament to enduring love and mutual support. He is also survived by his loving children, Sarah Elizabeth Spears and Roy E. "Res" Spears IV (Katie), who will carry on his spirit. His legacy further lives on through his adored grandchildren, William Roy Spears and Elizabeth Grace Spears. He leaves behind his sisters, Anne Lee Spears O'Hare (Tim) and Betsy Spears Jones (Jeff); his brother-in-law, Stephen Parker (Tammy); and his sister-in-law, Cathy Parker, along with a host of cherished nieces and nephews who will miss his presence dearly.

The family wishes to express their profound gratitude to Dr. Mark Fleming and his compassionate team at Virginia Oncology, especially Melissa, for their exceptional care. They also extend a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful professionals at Hospice of Virginia, whose support brought comfort during a difficult time.

A memorial service to honor Res’s remarkable life will be held at 2 PM on Friday, December 1, 2023, at Suffolk Presbyterian Church, with the Reverend Jonathan C. Palmer officiating. Following the service, all are invited to a reception in the church social hall to share memories and celebrate the impact Res had on so many lives. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial contribution are kindly asked to consider Suffolk Presbyterian Church, 410 N. Main St., Suffolk, VA 23434, or Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, 3373 Pruden Blvd., Suffolk, VA 23434. The family is being served by R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory.
