Cape May County Welcomes the 18th Annual NJ Run for the Fallen

On Thursday, September 24, 2026, Cape May County will become the backdrop for the 18th Annual NJ Run for the Fallen. The event, now a cherished tradition, sees military runners and a dedicated support crew march through a dozen shore towns, pausing at 60 Hero Markers that honor New Jersey service members who gave their lives during the Global War on Terror.

Each mile covered represents one fallen service member. After every mile, the runners present a flag and a personalized biographical card to the family or friends waiting at the marker – a small but powerful gesture of remembrance.

The day kicks off at 7:40 a.m. from Sunset Beach in Cape May Point (502 Sunset Blvd.). From there the route snakes through Cape May Point, Cape May City, Lower Township, Wildwood Crest, Wildwood, Stone Harbor/Avalon, Sea Isle City/Strathmere and finally arrives in Ocean City.

Ocean City’s Morvay‑Miley‑Cruice American Legion Post 524 has been a steadfast partner since the run’s inception in 2009. After the runners have visited all 60 markers, Post 524 will host a dinner for Gold Star families, the core runners, and the support team at its headquarters on West Avenue.

Before the run, a remembrance ceremony will be held on Wednesday, September 23, at the Naval Air Station Museum (500 Forrestal Road, Cape May Airport). Gold Star families, core runners, and support crew will share a buffet dinner following the ceremony.

The public is invited to join the tribute. In Ocean City alone there are 31 Hero Markers spread across 16 locations. Attendees are encouraged to arrive about 45 minutes early at any marker to show their gratitude for the sacrifices made by service members and their families.
