Amlas are an excellent source of Vitamin C and antioxidants, which are essential for our body functions. According to WebMD, consuming amlas can help you control diabetes and improve your digestion , eyesight, immunity, memory, and brain health.
A study published in 2017 also revealed that amla can help stop an enzyme that could lead to hair loss. Also known as pigeon pea, Toor or Arhar dal is a great choice for vegetarians and vegans as it is an excellent source of plant based protein. This dal also contains dietary fibres, which help maintain a happy digestive system and weight.
Toor dal is rich in iron and folate that might help pump iron levels in your body and correct iron deficiency anaemia. Then take a pressure cooker and put amlas, chopped onions, green chillies, turmeric , water, and salt along with the soaked dal in it. Pressure cook it for 3 whistles before switching off the burner. Allow the steam to escape from the cooker. Take out the mushy amlas on a plate and deseed them. Keep them aside.
Now take a ladle and mash the dal. Add the mashed amlas and adjust the dal's consistency as per your preference. If you want to add water, this is the time to do so. Add salt to the dal and give it a good mix. Keep it aside. For tempering, take a small pan and add oil. After it heats up, add mustard seeds and wait for them to splutter.
After they do, add cumin seeds, hing, red chilli, and curry leaves. Sauté the pan ingredients for 30 seconds and add chopped amlas to it. Sprinkle some red chilli powder as well. Cook it for 30 seconds and switch off the flame. Add this tempering to dal and give it a good mix. And voila! Your amla dal is ready to serve! Read the full recipe here .
