Bengaluru: Zomato Delivery Agent Attacked Over Food Delay; Two Arrested

A Zomato delivery agent in Bengaluru was physically assaulted by two customers following a delay in food delivery. Police swiftly arrested the two individuals involved in the incident in Kamakshipalya.

In a deeply disturbing incident that has once again cast a harsh light on the perils faced by gig economy workers, a Zomato delivery agent in Bengaluru was allegedly subjected to a brutal assault by customers infuriated by a food delivery delay. The shocking event unfolded in the Kamakshipalya area, prompting a police investigation and the swift arrest of two individuals involved.

The victim, 28-year-old Manjunath, was on his routine delivery rounds when he arrived at the address of customer Anil Kumar, 23.

According to Manjunath's complaint, the delivery, due to unforeseen circumstances, was delayed by approximately 30 minutes. What followed was a horrifying escalation from verbal abuse to a full-blown physical assault, leaving the delivery agent with injuries.

As Manjunath attempted to explain the delay, Anil Kumar, along with his associate Shridhar, 28, reportedly launched into a tirade of expletives and insults.

The situation quickly spiraled out of control when the verbal assault turned physical. Manjunath was allegedly punched repeatedly, struck with a helmet, and kicked, sustaining injuries to his nose and mouth in the unprovoked attack.

Undeterred by the harrowing experience, Manjunath immediately reported the incident to the Kamakshipalya police.

Based on his detailed complaint, law enforcement officials registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).

Acting swiftly on the complaint, the Kamakshipalya police apprehended both Anil Kumar and Shridhar on Wednesday, just a day after the incident.

Both accused are reported to be working as packers in a private company. Their arrests underscore the seriousness with which authorities are treating acts of violence against essential service providers.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the immense pressure and often hostile conditions faced by delivery personnel, who are the backbone of the booming online service industry.

It highlights the urgent need for greater respect, empathy, and better safety mechanisms to protect these frontline workers who strive to provide convenience to millions, often at personal risk.
