Arsenal's Defensive Crunch: Is Jarrell Quansah the Answer?

Amidst Key Injuries, Arsenal Sets Sights on Versatile Defender Jarrell Quansah

With Saliba and Timber sidelined, Arsenal is reportedly in talks with Bayer Leverkusen for Jarrell Quansah, a promising English defender. Can they secure him despite Leverkusen's reluctance?

It feels a bit like groundhog day for Arsenal, doesn't it? Just when you think the squad is finding its rhythm, the injury bug strikes, particularly at the back. Right now, Mikel Arteta finds himself in a rather precarious position, desperately needing defensive reinforcements as key players are sidelined. And, frankly, the whispers around the Emirates suggest Jarrell Quansah is the name at the top of their wishlist.

William Saliba, our defensive lynchpin, is unfortunately battling an ongoing back issue that was aggravated during the World Cup – a real blow, to say the least. While thankfully surgery isn't needed, he's out for an extended period. Then there's Jurriën Timber, a player many had high hopes for, still weeks away from returning from a persistent groin problem that first cropped up back in March. Even Ben White, a reliable option for both centre-back and right-back, has only recently made his comeback from a knee ligament injury. Suddenly, the need for a versatile defender isn't just a luxury; it's an absolute necessity.

Enter Jarrell Quansah, the 23-year-old English defender currently plying his trade with Bayer Leverkusen. He's exactly the kind of player Arteta seems to be looking for: comfortable at both centre-back and right-back. He even made three appearances for England at the 2026 World Cup, though he did pick up a red card in the last-16 clash against Mexico – a slight blemish, perhaps, but it speaks to his involvement at the highest level.

Arsenal, it seems, has already opened discussions with Leverkusen. However, and this is where it gets tricky, a formal bid hadn't been lodged as of August 15th, 2026. And here's the rub: Leverkusen are, understandably, quite reluctant to part ways with him. They only signed him from Liverpool in the summer of 2025 for an initial £30 million, and they're reportedly looking for a fee well in excess of that, perhaps upwards of €50 million (£43 million).

Remember Quansah's move from Liverpool? It was a tidy bit of business for Leverkusen. There was even talk of a €70 million (£59 million) buy-back clause for Liverpool, but that option has since expired, leaving the Reds out of the picture for now. The good news for Arsenal, however, is that Quansah, a Warrington native, is apparently quite open to a move to North London. That, at least, is a promising sign.

This isn't Arsenal's first rodeo in this window, of course. They previously had a £30 million bid for Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa rejected, with Villa reportedly valuing him closer to £60 million. It just goes to show the premium being placed on quality defensive talent right now. With options thinning, and only Cristhian Mosquera mentioned as additional cover, the clock is ticking for Arsenal to secure the defensive depth Arteta clearly believes is vital for the upcoming season. Getting Quansah might be tough, but for a team with title ambitions, it's a battle they simply have to fight.
