Originally scheduled to be played in June and July last year, the competition had to be postponed after China decided not to host the AFC Asian Cup following the COVID 19 pandemic and due to its zero COVID policy.
Qatar was eventually named as the hosts for the tournament in October 2022. Having successfully organised the FIFA World Cup in 2022, Qatar will now be aiming to defend their AFC Asian Cup title in their backyard. In the AFC Asian Cup 2023 opener, hosts Qatar will be up against Lebanon on Friday, January 12 at the Lusail Stadium.

Countries will be playing against each other once at the group stage. Following the completion of the group stage fixtures, the top two sides from each group and the four best ranked third placed teams will qualify for the round of 16. Venues Overall, nine stadiums will host the AFC Asian Cup matches this time.
The nine venues are Lusail Stadium, Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, Al Bayt Stadium, Al Janoub Stadium, Education City Stadium, Khalifa International Stadium, Al Thumama Stadium, Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium and Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.
