A Shadow of Grief: IIT Kanpur Grapples with Another Student Suicide

The campus community is reeling from the heartbreaking news that Phaneendra Deep, a bright fourth-year B.Tech student from the Electrical Engineering department, has died by suicide.

The somber incident unfolded late Monday night, around 11:30 PM, within the confines of his room, number 405, in Hall 8. It was his roommate, Rahul, who, upon returning, made the devastating discovery, immediately alerting the authorities to the unfolding tragedy. It's truly heartbreaking to imagine the shock and grief that must have swept through the hostel in those initial moments.

Law enforcement, including Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Raveena Tyagi, quickly confirmed the unfortunate event. A forensic team was dispatched to the scene, meticulously collecting evidence as part of their standard procedure, and Deep's body was subsequently sent for a post-mortem examination. As of now, the precise reasons behind this deeply distressing decision remain unclear, with no suicide note having been found, leaving family, friends, and the institution searching for answers.

The institution itself, understandably, is grappling with this immense loss. IIT Kanpur has issued a statement expressing its profound grief, reiterating its unwavering commitment to the well-being of its students.
