A Life Richly Lived: Celebrating the Legacy of Marian Jean Boehm

It is with heavy hearts, yet profound gratitude for a life truly well-lived, that we share the news of Marian Jean Boehm’s peaceful passing on Monday, December 2, 2019. Just shy of her 96th birthday, Marian, a cherished resident of Schnecksville, left this world surrounded by the love of her family. Anyone who knew Marian would tell you she was a remarkable woman – a devoted matriarch, a compassionate caregiver, and truly a cornerstone of her community.

Born on August 20, 1924, to Harry M. and Margaret (Pflueger) Semmel, Marian’s roots were deeply planted right here in the Lehigh Valley. She carried a bright, inquisitive spirit right through the halls of Schnecksville High School, proudly graduating with the Class of 1942. But her thirst for knowledge and a strong desire to serve didn't stop there. She went on to earn her Registered Nurse degree from Cedar Crest College in 1945, embarking on a path that would define much of her professional life, and indeed, her character.

Marian dedicated herself wholeheartedly to caring for others, a calling she fulfilled with grace and professionalism. Her hands-on nursing career saw her working at Allentown Hospital, where she made a tangible difference in countless lives, and later at Cedarbrook’s Fountain Hill Annex. Even before her nursing days, she lent her skills as a switchboard operator, a fascinating little piece of history, wouldn't you say? Yet, perhaps her most significant 'career' was the one she crafted at home, becoming a loving homemaker who nurtured her family with unwavering devotion.

Her heart found its true partner in Richard A. Boehm. Their marriage, a beautiful journey spanning five decades, was a testament to enduring love and partnership until Richard’s passing in 2000. Together, they built a home filled with warmth and laughter, raising three wonderful children: Barry R. and his wife Diane, Bonita A. Smith and her husband Terry, and Brent R. and his wife Maryann. Marian absolutely glowed as a mother, and that joy only magnified when she became a grandmother to Brent, Todd, Janelle, Derek, and Devin, and then a great-grandmother to Tyler, Taylor, Morgan, and Luke. Her family truly was her world, her greatest pride and joy, and oh, how she cherished every moment with them.

Beyond her family, Marian’s presence was deeply felt throughout Schnecksville. She was a faithful and incredibly active member of Union Lutheran Church, always ready to lend a hand with WELCA or serve on the altar guild. But her community spirit didn't stop at the church doors; she was also a valued member of the Historical Society, the Garden Club (where her green thumb truly shone, you know?), and her beloved Bridge Club, where she surely shared many a laugh. And speaking of beloved, anyone who ever tasted her baking knows she had a special touch, especially with her legendary peanut butter cookies. Oh, they were just wonderful! When she wasn't tending her garden or baking, you could often find her lost in a good book or meticulously working on a sewing project. She simply embraced life's simple, yet profound, pleasures.

Marian was predeceased by her dear sister, Betty Ann Snyder, and her brother, Charles Semmel, but her spirit, her kindness, and her indomitable strength live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and tireless dedication to her family and community. We will gather to celebrate Marian's remarkable journey, beginning with a calling hour on Friday, December 6, 2019, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at Union Lutheran Church, located at 5500 PA-873, Schnecksville, PA 18078. A funeral service will follow promptly at 10:30 AM, officiated by Reverend Dennis H. Rusenko. Marian will then be laid to rest beside her beloved Richard in Union Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests memorial contributions be made to Union Lutheran Church at the address listed above. Heintzelman Funeral Home, Inc. in Schnecksville has been entrusted with the arrangements, ensuring Marian receives a fitting farewell.
