Franklin Bids Farewell to Beloved Veteran and Family Patriarch, Joe Lewis Montgomery Sr.
Franklin, TN mourns the loss of Joe Lewis Montgomery Sr., a devoted family man, U.S. Army veteran, and cherished community member, who passed away at 79. His life was marked by love, service, and a passion for family and farming.
It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of Joe Lewis Montgomery Sr.'s passing. On Saturday, May 18, 2024, at the age of 79, Joe peacefully departed from his home in Franklin, Tennessee, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories and an enduring legacy of love.
Born right here in Franklin on August 31, 1944, Joe was a true local, a son of this soil. He was the beloved child of the late Thomas Sr. and Annie Mae P. Montgomery, who instilled in him the values that would shape his remarkable life.
Joe grew up in a large, vibrant family, a testament to the close-knit community he held so dear. While he has now joined many of his beloved siblings who passed before him — Thomas Jr., Paul, William, Willie J., Robert, David, George, Emma Montgomery, and Mary Anne Davis — he leaves behind his loving sisters, Betty Jo Waters, Annie Louise Hayes (and her husband, Joe), and Shirley Armstrong (and her husband, Robert), who will undoubtedly miss his presence deeply.
Joe's dedication extended far beyond his immediate family. A proud U.S. Army veteran, he bravely served our nation during the Vietnam War, a period that undoubtedly shaped his steadfast character. After his military service, he dedicated three decades of his life to the Ford Glass Plant in Nashville, where his strong work ethic was well-known. Even in retirement, Joe wasn't one to sit still; he continued to contribute to the community, spending another ten years working with Williamson County Schools, always with a smile and a helpful hand.
The true cornerstone of Joe's life, however, was his family. For a remarkable 58 years, he shared a deep and abiding love with his cherished wife, Mattie Mai Montgomery. Together, they built a beautiful life, raising three wonderful sons: Joe Lewis Jr. (and his wife, Cynthia), Kevin (and his wife, Kimberly), and Jeffrey (and his wife, Lakisha). He wasn't just a father; he was a steadfast patriarch, a source of unwavering support and boundless love. His grandchildren — Brittni, Brandy, Kevin Jr., Devan, Jevon, Kyla, Jace, and Jordyn — held a special place in his heart, as did his precious great-grandchildren: Briley, Kason, Kymoni, Kashton, and Kynslee. Watching his family grow brought him immense joy, a true testament to the rich legacy he leaves behind.
Beyond his roles as a veteran and family man, Joe found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was a faithful member of Limestone Baptist Church, where his dedication was evident in his service on the Usher Board – a quiet, dependable presence. Outdoors, he was truly in his element, with a genuine love for farming, hunting, and fishing. Anyone who knew Joe could tell you about his green thumb; he had a special knack for growing the most delicious vegetables, a true gift he often shared with others. Of course, nothing quite topped gathering with his beloved family, especially over one of those home-cooked meals he adored. And let's not forget his passion for sports – a loyal fan, you could often find him cheering on his Vanderbilt Commodores and, of course, the Tennessee Titans. What truly stood out about Joe, though, was his incredible work ethic, his unwavering dedication to those he loved, that warm, welcoming smile, and a laugh that could brighten any room. He embodied the very best of what it means to be a husband, a father, a grandfather, a brother, and a friend. His absence will be profoundly felt by everyone whose lives he touched.
The family invites friends and loved ones to join them in remembering Joe and celebrating his remarkable life. Visitation will take place on Friday, May 24, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Limestone Baptist Church, located at 1613 West Main Street, Franklin, TN. Another opportunity for visitation will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed immediately by the funeral service at 12:00 PM, also at Limestone Baptist Church. Reverend Timothy L. Adair will lead the service, offering words of comfort and reflection. Joe will be laid to rest at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens. The arrangements are being thoughtfully handled by W.S. Ryan and Sons Funeral Home.
